Character Day: Gillian and Chrissy's Base Groups

To celebrate Character Strength Day, we got together and explored what gratitude means, discussed what we are grateful fro, read stories about being thankful and made our own movies.

Here they are:

Character Day: Nic, Kath and John's Base Groups

Today was Character Day!

Nicola, Kath and John's base group worked together to create some art and music. We made kindness and gratitude cards. We also made some trees for someone that we love.

We made music to go together with a story that we read about bravery and courage:

We learnt this song:

Autahi and the One Seed Story

We have been reading the One Seed Story by Rosemary Phillips.  It is about one seed who wants to grow in the desert but the other seeds all say, "It's impossible!" "You'll never survive!" But the seed doesn't care and he just keeps trying.  He uses patience and perseverance to show everyone that he can grow.

We listened to the story on the computer and then we read the story with buddies.

Then we also did some writing.  we wrote about things that can grow from seeds and a time when we did something we thought we couldn't do.  Here is our writing.

We also learned the song to go with the story.  We have been practising it. Click this link to hear the song and sing along at home! One Seed Song

Autahi's Dot Day Creations

For International Dot Day we read the story, The Dot by Peter H. Reynolds.  Then we did some exploring of different ways we could create dots.

We made bigger dots using small pom poms.
We made paintings with lots of little dots.
We put feathers and sparkles and cardboard shapes on our dots.

I drew shapes inside the cupcake holder.

Ball Exploration

We loved getting outside this week. As the week has got on it has warmed up even more. We enjoyed exploring what we could do with a small tennis ball. We found it was quite tricky to throw and catch up high. We had some fun and made up some tricks, like throwing it between our legs, balancing and high kicks; some even tried the under one leg bounce and catch. Fun to just have a play and explore.

Planting our Little Garden

We were excited to open a big box addressed to Autahi Gardeners this week. Inside we found 30 little seed pots and a Little Garden to put it in. We spent an afternoon with working with a buddy to plant them all.

First we poured water on the soil tablet. As it absorbed water it grew bigger and bigger.

We really enjoyed watching that! We were all looking so closely at it, and taking much delight in watching it 'grow'.

When the soil was back to being normal soil we scooped it into the seed pots, but not all the way to the top.

The we put the seed mat in...

...and covered it wit soil to the top.

Next we gave our seeds a little water.

And finally found it's matching place in the garden.

Now to wait and see what sprouts!!
