What is Beautiful?

We have been exploring the character strength of Appreciation of Beauty and Excellence as part of our positive education learning.

WHAT IS APPRECIATION OF BEAUTY & EXCELLENCE?
Those who express an appreciation of beauty & excellence notice and appreciate beauty, excellence and/or skilled performance in all domains of life, from nature to art to mathematics to science to everyday experience.
PHYSICAL BEAUTY.
This may include auditory, tactile or abstract. This type of goodness produces awe and wonder in the person experiencing it.
SKILL OR TALENT (EXCELLENCE).
This is often energizing, and compels a person to pursue their own goals. It inspires admiration.
VIRTUE OR MORAL GOODNESS (MORAL BEAUTY).
Virtual goodness makes someone want to be better, more loving and creates feelings of elevation.

We looked at some pictures and had a debate to see whether we found them beautiful or not beautiful. We had to justify our thoughts using the word 'because' to give a reason. There are no wrong answers in this kind of debate because we want to open ourselves up to hearing the opinions of others and using that to shape our own thinking.

We used these ideas in our writing later in the week and had to think of things we found beautiful.

So keep your eye out for that beauty that is all around us.

Arts Celebration

We are working hard at the moment gearing up for the arts celebration later this term. In Autahi we are exploring different kinds of visual art and using different mediums to show some of our inquiry learning from throughout the year so far. Each week we will showcase some of what we have been working on and we encourage you all to come and join us in Week 5 to check out our gallery of creations.

Arts Celebration:
Wednesday 21st and Thursday 22nd of August from 5.30pm til 7pm
Come and check out our amazing art from across the school.

Thank You and Farewell ... for now!

On my last week before I embark on a new adventure for a little while I have been reflecting on the last 7 years of being part of the Worser Bay whanau and the word that has come to mind is gratitude.

I am so grateful to have had the privilege to work in such a beautiful place, with wonderful people, amazing kids and supportive and helpful families.  This blog post is a tribute to all of you!

The place
I'm grateful for the amazing place I got to come to everyday for the last 7 school years! You can't beat the view and we are so lucky to be where we are!

 The Kids
I'm grateful for the amazing kids I have gotten to know and watch grow over the years.  You are all so wonderful and unique.  You are creative, courageous, kind, patient and so much more and I have loved teaching you all!

The Families
I am grateful for all of the families who entrust us with their precious cargo and support us in our endeavours to teach and help shape their children.  Thank you for the endless support in and out of the classroom.  Thank you for making it to picnics, pre-sunrise breakfasts, evening workshops, beach celebrations and so much more.  I have loved getting to know you!

The Staff
And finally to the staff.  It has been so wonderful to work alongside such creative, open, enthusiastic, smart and passionate people.  You pour your hearts and souls into what we do and I have loved getting to know you, learn from you, and work with you.

He aha te mea nui o te ao
What is the most important thing in the world?
He tāngata, he tāngata, he tāngata
It is the people, it is the people, it is the people
Thank you Worser Bay!
