Teddy bears picnic and cross curricular activities

This week in Autahi we have been exploring the theme of a teddy bears picnic. Throughout the week we have had a range of activities with links all across the curriculum. Here are some examples of the different activities and how they tie in with our curriculum.

Maths

Maths in the context of a teddy bears picnic has been a blast this week. We have been using tens frames to make different numbers of bears on the bus and using different things to measure our teddies. All the learning uses bears or picnics as a context and has challenged us to use lots of different strategies to solve different kinds of problems.

Literacy

All of our reading and writing this week has been teddy bears picnic themed. Whether it is reading stories about a family of bears living in the forest or writing about our best bear, it has all fitted into the theme. We are having so many rich experiences everyday with our bears that we have so much to write about.

The Arts

We have been inspired by our awesome Arts Celebration to become performers. One of the way we have been exploring this is telling stories with puppets and because this week is all about bears we have been designing and creating our own puppets. They aren't quite finished yet but I can't wait to see how they turn out. Some of the cutting has been quite challenging but we have seen some great perseverance and teamwork to overcome those obstacles.

Health and PE

We have been learning the story "We're going on a bear hunt" and learning to stretch our bodies with some bear hunt yoga. Practising and strengthening our core balance is part of the fundamental movement skills we learn. Many of us (adults included) struggle with balancing and this is a fun way to develop those skills in a learning context.

These are just a few examples of the learning happening this week. Teddies make great learning buddies except when they eat all the honey sandwiches I made for lunch.
