To start the term in Autahi, we have been exploring the voyages from the Pacific to Aotearoa. In preparation for our upcoming visit to Te Papa we have started looking into the reasons why people might leave their homes and the ways they might have travelled across the Pacific Ocean.
We shared ideas about the reasons why we thought people might leave their homes. This exercise is for us to find out what we know already and to listen to new ideas.
We explored how we thought travellers might have made their way across the ocean. My favourite comment was that they wouldn't have had fuel or electricity. This guided our thinking about paddles and sails as a way to power the waka.
We explored texts that helped to confirm some of our ideas and gave us new questions about the Pacific Voyages. Things like what did they take on the boat and how did they cook food?
Carl acted as if he was going on his own Pacific voyage. When he went to depart however, he found that he had forgotten to pack. The children in Autahi all gave great ideas about what he could take.
When he said he couldn't take everything they had suggested they were shocked.
If we had to leave one thing behind, what would it be?
We encourage you to continue the conversation at home. Think about how you might make a mini waka to float in the bath? What kinds of things would you take on your own long journeys?
