Number talks 2023

Maths is tasty and delicious. Escpecially with loads butter. Oh wait am I thinking of scones....

When we are looking we can see Maths all around us. Take the image above as an example and think about what concepts in Maths you can see?

  • Did you notice fractions and whole numbers?
  • Repeated addition 4+4+4+4+4
  • 4 times tables 4x4
In Autahi, Number talks provide a purpose which we can attach all of our Maths knowledge to. We do this together so that different ideas can be shared and listened to by all.
Children are encouraged to share what they can see and the teachers help to rephrase and talk through the mathematical concepts being explored.
We try and look for as many different ways to explore the mathematical idea to show that there are more than one way to solve a problem.

This week we looked at an increasing number of dots. After taking a short time to look and think about what we can see we shared our ideas. This sparked a conversation about doubles and what is and isn't a double. We predicted what the next row of dots might be.

There are so many ways to explore the world of Maths and number talks highlight the creativity and flexibility of solving problems.

So next time you are walking and notice this
Stop and take a photo, it might just make a good number talk.
